Choosing a sauna heater starts with room volume, but physical cubic footage is not always the number a manufacturer wants you to use. Glass doors, windows, tile, brick, concrete, stone and uninsulated construction can increase heat loss, so manufacturers may treat the room as effectively larger when sizing the heater.
Use the calculator to estimate effective volume. When a supported manufacturer method is selected, apply that manufacturer’s documented adjustment rules and compare the result with verified published room-volume ranges.
Important: This is a planning tool, not an electrical or installation approval. Always verify the exact heater model’s current manual, room-volume range, safety clearances, controls, voltage and electrical requirements before buying or installing it.

How sauna heater sizing works
Start with the interior length, width and ceiling height. Multiply these dimensions to find physical room volume: length × width × height. Use feet for cubic feet or metres for cubic metres. For room-planning context, see our sauna size guide.
Next, select the manufacturer method. HUUM and Saunum use different cold-surface adjustments, and Saunum also specifies an adjustment for uninsulated log, plank or stave construction. General estimate is a physical-volume baseline for an insulated room with no cold surfaces; it does not invent a universal adjustment. Harvia sizing is directed to Harvia’s own calculator.
Why glass can change heater size
Glass and other uninsulated surfaces can increase heat loss. The supplied HUUM rule adds 3.3 ft³ for each 1 ft² of uninsulated brick, tile or glass. Saunum Air L US adds 3.0 ft³ for each 1 ft² of cold surface, including glass, tile, brick, concrete or stone.
Enter glass separately from other cold surfaces so the same area is not counted twice. For HUUM, enter only brick or tile in the other-area field; this calculator does not apply an unverified HUUM rule to concrete or stone.
What is effective sauna volume?
Effective sauna volume is the physical room volume after the selected manufacturer’s documented construction and cold-surface adjustments. It is the calculator’s primary result and the value compared with the stored manufacturer room-volume ranges.
The result shows physical volume, construction adjustment and cold-surface adjustment separately. Displayed cubic feet are rounded to the nearest whole number, while model matching uses the unrounded result. Metric measurements are converted for the supplied US calculation rules.
What about uninsulated log saunas?
For Saunum Air L US, multiply the physical volume of an uninsulated log, plank or stave room by 1.5, then add the cold-surface adjustment. A 6 × 6 × 7 ft room has a physical volume of 252 ft³; with this construction adjustment and no cold surfaces, its effective volume is 378 ft³.
No additional HUUM log multiplier is supplied. The calculator therefore marks that manufacturer-specific result unavailable for uninsulated construction rather than guessing. Harvia’s own calculator accounts for log construction through its manufacturer methodology.
Why we match by manufacturer room-volume range
A kW label alone is not the matching rule. This calculator checks whether the effective volume falls within the published minimum and maximum for the exact stored model and voltage. The endpoints are included. The table below contains the supplied verified HUUM HIVE ranges.
| Model | 240V output | 240V room range | 208V output | 208V room range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HUUM HIVE Mini 6 | 6 kW | 177–318 ft³ | 4.5 kW | 142–248 ft³ |
| HUUM HIVE Mini 9 | 9 kW | 283–460 ft³ | 6.75 kW | 212–354 ft³ |
| HUUM HIVE Mini 11 | 10.6 kW | 354–566 ft³ | 7.9 kW | 265–424 ft³ |
| HUUM HIVE 12 | 12 kW | 424–636 ft³ | 9 kW | 318–495 ft³ |
| HUUM HIVE 15 | 15 kW | 530–813 ft³ | 11.25 kW | 389–601 ft³ |
| HUUM HIVE 18 | 18 kW | 636–989 ft³ | 13.5 kW | 477–742 ft³ |
Reference: HUUM HIVE manufacturer resources. No verified Saunum model ranges are stored in this tool, so its effective-volume result does not produce model recommendations.
Can two heater models fit the same sauna?
Yes. Manufacturer room-volume ranges can overlap. At an effective volume of 360 ft³ and 240V, the stored HUUM HIVE Mini 9 range of 283–460 ft³ and HIVE Mini 11 range of 354–566 ft³ both cover the result. The calculator displays both as manufacturer room-volume matches, without declaring a universal winner.
At 208V, the same 360 ft³ result instead matches the HIVE Mini 11 and HIVE 12. The Mini 9’s 208V maximum is 354 ft³, so it no longer matches.
Should I oversize a sauna heater?
Do not add an arbitrary sizing margin or select a heater solely because its kW rating is higher. Apply the documented method and compare the effective volume with the exact model’s published range. An overlapping range is a starting point for checking that model’s requirements, not an installation approval.
If none of the stored ranges covers your result, consult HUUM’s current electric-heater documentation or the documentation for your chosen manufacturer.
120V, 208V and 240V
The calculator’s verified model data distinguishes HUUM ratings at 240V and 208V. Changing this selection changes model ratings and matching ranges without changing the room’s effective volume. No 120V model ranges are supplied, so the calculator does not offer 120V matching.
This is not an electrical-design tool. Confirm the exact model’s voltage, controls and electrical requirements with its current documentation and your installation professional. Read our sauna electrical requirements guide for planning context.
Worked example: a glass-front sauna
For an insulated 7 × 6 × 7 ft room with 20 ft² of glass, physical volume is 294 ft³. Using HUUM’s supplied method, the glass adjustment is 20 × 3.3 = 66 ft³. Effective volume is 294 + 66 = 360 ft³. At 240V, the HIVE Mini 9 and HIVE Mini 11 both overlap this result.
For the supplied Saunum example, a 7 × 6 × 8.4 ft room has a physical volume of 352.8 ft³. With 24 ft² of glass, add 24 × 3.0 = 72 ft³. The unrounded effective volume is 424.8 ft³, displayed as 425 ft³.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my room has no glass or other cold surfaces?
Enter zero for both areas. For an insulated 5 × 6 × 7 ft room, physical and effective volume are both 210 ft³; the cold-surface adjustment is zero.
Why is a manufacturer-specific result unavailable?
The tool does not guess an unsupported adjustment or model range. General estimate cannot adjust for cold surfaces or uninsulated construction; HUUM has no supplied log multiplier; Harvia uses its own calculator. Saunum effective-volume calculations are available, but no verified Saunum model ranges are stored.
Does changing units change the room?
No. Switching US and Metric converts the entered dimensions and surface areas. The manufacturer calculation and model matching use unrounded values; displayed cubic feet are rounded.
Can this calculator specify wiring or approve installation?
No. It estimates effective sauna volume and compares the supplied manufacturer ranges. It does not provide breaker sizes, conductor gauges, hard-wiring instructions or installation approval.
